Cobolt Speechmaster Talking 2 Timer Timestat Instructions SAFETY: Your TIMESTAT has been manufactured to stringent safety standards and uses a moulded plug and fitted socket for maximum protection. Like all mains operated devices it should be treated with care and in particular should not be used if the case or cables become damaged. There are no user serviceable parts inside and the case should not be opened. The plug has a 10 amp replaceable fuse. If this blows the cause should be investigated by a competent person before the unit is re-used. If the Thermostat function is used to control a heater which has its own thermostat control, the thermostat in the heater should be turned to max. The temperature probe by the cables should be treated with care and should not be pulled or twisted. GENERAL: The TIMESTAT has 2 independent timers adjustable individualy for every day of the week, a thermostat and a frostat. These can be used seperately or together to control a mains operated appliance up to a maximum rating of 2 Kw, i.e. electric heaters, tape recorders, radios, electric blankets, kettles etc. The TIMESTAT is very simple to set and use and has a very clear voice with volume control. When plugged into a standard wall socket it charges its built in battery and will remember its settings for several months when disconnected. No batteries are required. The TIMESTAT also functions as a talking clock and a talking thermometer. The TIMESTAT has 2 leads - one has a 3 pin plug for connection to a 13 amp wall socket, the other shorter lead has a 3 pin 13 amp socket into which the appliance to be controlled should be plugged. Your TIMESTAT was charged and set before leaving the factory. When fully charged it will retain its time and settings for several months when un-plugged. We recommend that the unit be left plugged in for 120 hours after purchase to fully re-charge its internal battery. Please note that, although it will remember its settings when disconnected, the unit can only be used and set, and will only speak, when plugged into a 13 amp socket! When first plugged in the TIMESTAT will offer you a brief reminder of how to set it - pressing any button will stop this reminder. You can ask for this HELP message to be repeated at any time, except when changing settings, by pressing the bottom left button twice within 2 secs. OPERATION: We recommend that you plug the TIMESTAT into a wall socket and set it before connecting the appliance to avoid accidentally switching the appliance on and off. If you hold the unit with the leads at the top you will feel 3 rows of buttons on the front panel - 2 on the top, 3 on the centre and 3 on the bottom. The top and centre rows have square buttons, the bottom row of buttons are diamond shaped. The top left is the MODE button. Pressing it will tell you which mode you are currently in. Pressing it again repeatedly within 2 secs will step through the five available modes. These are explained later. The top right is the ON/OFF button. Pressing it will tell you whether the appliance is currently on or off. Pressing it repeatedly within 2 secs will switch the appliance on or off in MANUAL or any of the TIMER MODES. In any THERMOSTAT mode it will switch the TIMESTAT control on or off but it will not override the thermostat - this is a safety feature to prevent the thermostat being accidentally turned off. In THERMOSTAT modes the ON/OFF button works in exactly the same way as the ON/OFF switch would work on an electric fire with a built-in thermostat. The middle left is the TIME SET button. Middle centre is TIMER SET and middle right is TEMPERATURE SET. Pressing these will tell you the current time, current timer settings or current temperature respectively. Pressing them again within 2 secs will allow you to alter the settings. These are explained later. The bottom left is the DAY button. Pressing it once will cause the day of the week to be spoken. Pressing it again within 2 secs will repeat the help message which was spoken when the unit was first plugged in. This button is also used for setting the DAY of the week and for switching between degrees Centigrade and Farenheit, as explained later. The bottom centre and right buttons are used to adjust the volume. They are also used to adjust the time and thermostat settings as explained later MODES: (Top left button) MANUAL: All automatic controls are switched off and the TIMESTAT operates as a simple switch controlled by the top right ON/OFF button. This mode should be used if you do not wish to use the timers or thermostat. TIMER: The appliance will be controlled by the two independent timers. THERMOSTAT: The appliance will be controlled by the thermostat. TIMER THERMOSTAT: The appliance will be switched on and off by the timers and will, while on, be controlled by the thermostat. This allows, for instance, an electric heater to maintain a room temperature during the day and to be switched off at night. TIMER THERMOSTAT FROSTAT: The appliance is controlled in exactly the same way as in TIMER THERMOSTAT mode with the additional feature that the appliance will always be switched on if the temperature falls to freezing. This would allow the heater in the previous example to provide additional protection against freezing at night, even though the timers have switched the heater off. SETTING: If you lose track of where you are and are not sure what to do next while setting any functions, don't worry - you cannot damage the TIMESTAT by pressing the wrong buttons and if you do not press any buttons for 2 minutes it will sort itself out, tell you what the settings are and switch itself out of setting mode so that you can check with the middle row of buttons and start again if necessary. TIME SETTING: Press the middle left button twice within 2 secs. Now use the bottom left button to change the DAY, the bottom centre to change the HOUR and the bottom right to change the MINUTES. The first press of each of these buttons will give the current setting. Press them again within 2 secs to alter. Press the middle left button again to leave the time setting mode. NOTE: If the minutes were changed when setting the time, the final press of the middle left button will re-set the seconds to zero to enable you to accurately synchronise the TIMESTAT with a time signal if required. TIMER SETTING: Press the middle centre button once to listen to the current settings of the timers. Press it again within 2 secs to start the setting process. The TIMESTAT will say "SET TIMER 1 ON TIME". You now have 3 choices: 1. Press the middle centre button again to leave the first timer settings as they are and progress to setting the second timer. 2. Press the bottom left button to leave first timer settings as they are but to switch all the days of the week off. Press the middle centre button again to begin setting the second timer. 3. Press the bottom centre or right buttons to alter the time at which timer 1 will switch on. When correct, press the middle centre button again to begin setting the duration. Press the bottom centre or right buttons to select the length of time you wish the appliance to remain on for. If you want to leave the days as they are press the middle centre button to begin setting the second timer. If you do wish to alter the days press the bottom left button to step through the days of the week. The TIMESTAT will say "MONDAY ON/OFF", "TUESDAY ON/OFF" etc. Individual days can be selected on or off by pressing the bottom centre or right buttons. When complete press the middle centre button again to begin setting the second timer. Repeat the above process to set TIMER 2. The final press of the middle centre button will take you out of the setting routine. The general principle is that you step through the sequence with the middle centre button and use the bottom row to change the settings. THERMOSTAT SETTING: Press the middle right button twice within 2 seconds. Now use the bottom left button to select either centigrade or farenheit and the bottom centre and right buttons to increase or decrease the temperature at which you want the thermostat to switch on. Press the centre right button again to fix the setting. Please remember that once you have set the timers and thermostat you must select which ones you want to take control of your appliance by use of the two buttons on the top row. RESET: If the Timestat appears to have `Locked Up' or be malfunctioning, the following procedure will clear the memories and re-start the clock: 1. Disconnect the mains power. 2. Hold down all 3 buttons in the middle row while re-connecting the power. 3. Hold the buttons down until the Timestat has sounded a warning tone and said `RESET'. 4. Reset the date, time and required timer settings. SPECIFICATION: Maximum Rating 2Kw Plug & Socket U.K. 13 Amp to BS 1363/A Plug Fuse 10 Amp Voltage 240v A.C. Memory Internal Ni-Cad.
